intervention?

today during my lunch break at the cookhouse, i saw this mynah bird with only one leg. the loss of one leg means that it has to hop around. yet, it does seem to be surviving well and tried to steal my food on one instance!

i wondered, for those with a compassionate heart, on seeing this one-legged bird, would they have opted to capture the bird so as to care for it and ensure that it does not get overly exposed to the rough elements out there?

but is capturing it and 'protecting' it really in the best interests of the bird? in this case, it does not seem to require any intervention of any sorts. compared to being stuck in a cage under 'protection', soaring its wings to fly is much more preferable.

that's the dilemma we face. often we find ourselves having to decide between letting nature take its course or obeying our own ethics and compassion. doctors, especially, do have to deal with the knowledge that for every life they save, they are interfering in the works of natural selection, in the notion of 'survival of the fittest'.

ultimately, we are required to make a choice between either. often, the right choice is not the easiest choice. if only it's as easy as choosing between black and white.

then again, no one ever said that life's a bed of roses.
