much has been touted about the recent leaps in technology. indeed, handphones have become powerful all-in-one media centers. you can now take photos, shoot videos, play games, surf net, complete office assignments and watch videos on handphones, not to mention the occasional talk (which was the original function of a phone) and sms.
yet given the improvements we have achieved in technology, we have not yet stumbled upon the way to improve the shortcomings in our personalities and human nature. indeed, i witnessed a juxtaposition of such an irony today.
today was any other ordinary day. while taking the lrt home, i sat down on one of the double seats. there was this middle-aged guy sitting beside me. he looked nondescript and i would not have given him a second look until i noticed something peculiar. he was holding his handphone horizontally at half-arm's length away, obivously watching a video.
up to this point, everything seemed fine, normal and ordinary. since he was leaning forward while i leaned back, i was able to see rough outlines of the video he was watching despite the reflection off the shiny handphone screen. after taking a sneak peek of about one second, i realised that he was watching a pornographic video.
wtf.
it was very obvious from the one second of video i saw. there was seemingly this female wearing a nurse uniform and she appeared to be taking off her clothes. the other warning flag was the seemingly undivided attention the guy was giving to his handphone. he would have drooled if it was not embarrassing.
i was absolutely disgusted.
watching pornographic materials is already bad enough, but to do it within public domain where prying eyes could easily see what is on the screen is taking it to a new low. such actions, although highly despicable, should be done in the confines of your private space. to think that the guy will dare to put it on his handphone AND watch it on the lrt. that's pushing it too far.
the irony was crystal-clear. we have reached new heights in technology, yet we used that new technological high to reach even lower and deeper into our carnal nature. perhaps humans are just animals after all with instincts and a carnal side, but we are above mere beasts by virtue of the fact that we are able to exercise self-control of our carnal side.
is it any coincidence that industry observers say that the high-definition video format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is most likely going to be highly influenced by the format that the pornography industry is inclined to, given that the last time round, they chose the VHS tapes over Betamax tapes.
using our deepest and lowest carnal nature to settle on which path to take in order to attain new technological highs. what an irony.
