egosurfing

In geek lingo, there's something known as 'egosurfing'. It's the act of typing your name into a search engine, eg Google, and start visiting every result that appears. Apparently for geeks this sort of helps them to 'boost' their ego by reviewing whatever achievements others laud them for.

Last time I used to be afraid of egosurfing. It was more like egobashingsurfing. This was expected given my friction with countless people. My current apprehension towards such stuffs has diminished considerably. I view such stuffs as part of going up and revisiting previous characters of mine. Sometimes I am just amused at stuffs I wrote or said last time, even for stuffs as recent as that of last year.

I used to dislike unfavourable comments and vowing to wipe out every single possible unsavoury comment and those who make them. This attitude created a positive feedback loop and just exacerbated the situation further. Now, I just view them as learning points for me. What's life without criticism? I take in my stride and see how I can learn from it.

Someone once told me that making a mistake is not the problem. It is the fact that I deny making that mistake. Denial, especially in the face of the truth or overwhelming evidence, is a sin that few people condone.

A valuable life lesson, indeed. Wise words and possibly the greatest gift from someone whom I disliked.
