blog
sometimes i find myself agreeing with hau quite a lot, especially about the part that most of my class have never seen the other side of society yet. i hope i am part of the minority.
that's nothing wrong being a middle-class kid. in fact, if i were not to say my school and other stuffs, i would have passed off as a neighbourhood secondary school kid (albeit a slightly more studious one) quite nicely.
perhaps it is becos most of my time is spent in the neightbourhood and i intereact mostly with other fellow middle-working class people, some of the issues that hau raised may not seem relevant to others, but to me, his views was in agreement with my own. i have neighbours who leave for work at the same time i go to school and come home when i am about to sleep. issues such as rising costs may not have been felt by most of my peers (due to their better environment), but to my neighbours, the effects may have well been like a sledgehammer.
i may be what others call a 'sua-ku', a mountain turtle or a phrase for being like a frog-in-the-well. my idea of having better food outside is the nearby nice zichar stall, not at some fancy restaurant. frequent visits to canteens in industrial estates are a norm for me, but then it allowed me to look at another side of working life in Singapore, not of that in the CBD, but that of down-to-earth labour in the industrial estates.
am I complaining about my life now? no. i actually enjoy it. what greater joy can it be when you can be at a kopitiam with the tv showing the football match and others watching it as well? the atmosphere beats any home viewing.
one of my mother's friend used to be in ri. he remarked tt his days in ri were different from now. back then, most of the people in his class used to come from poor families, but it seems to be the opposite case now.
society has certainly changed, but i am still the middle-class kid.
and i still think tt zichar stalls offer more than what most restaurants can ever offer.
