blog
Was sick of playing Real Madrid vs AC Milan on FIFA, so I've decided to continue crapping on this blog.
Bridges have been integral in human society since the dawn of history. A bridge can be a physical bridge or an abstract bridge. The purpose of the bridge is a simple one, to link 2 opposite sides. A physical one can be as simple as just a fallen tree across a stream or the majestic bridges that span over a few kilometres such as the Golden Gate Bridge. An abstract one is one of the 'unseen' bridges that we experience in daily life, such as inter-human relationships, tools of communications. As our specie continued its quest for knowledge, we have begun to build more and more bridges, both physical and abstract ones.
No doubt that with better technology, our physical bridges will only become bigger, taller, longer and stronger. Some time in the future, we may see bridges across vast seas of which we can only dream of now, such as over the Straits of Malacca. This kind of bridge is the kind which is crucial in keeping the lifeline of our economy working. If there's something wrong with the bridge, all you have to do is to repair it. Repair is often right to the point and there can seldom be areas where the ambiguity is simply too much.
The second type of bridges is the more tricky one. This kind of bridges is the one that takes time and effort to build. What really differs it from the physical type is that it requires emotional maintanence. Overlook the maintaining of such abstract bridges and very soon you will find no more bridge. Examples of this kind of bridge include your daily interactions, friendships, bonds you have with your closest friends etc. And yet, ironically, as much as technology seeks to help us build more of this type of bridges by exposing us to a much larger group of potential sides to build bridges to, the abstract bridges between us seem to have paled in importance. We seem to feel more distant from one another now. Ask yourself how many times have you really talked to your friends face to face as compared to on the computer. The abstract bridges now are separated by the cold, hard electrical wires and computers which serve only as a physical bridge. Communication inside families have dropped, social interaction have also seem to dropped for those who prefer to spend their time away in front of the monitor. These bridges are now but a pale shadow of those in the past, at least in the pre-information explosion age.
Even the poker game "Bridge" is aptly named. It helps you in social interaction and build those abstract bridges. Now, ask yourself, are you doing enough to maintain those abstract bridges of yours and are you putting effort to construct more of those bridges? The whole world is a entity of 6 billion to 7 billion different individuals. Imagine just building abstract bridges to just 0.001% of them. There's are infinite possibilities to build abstract bridges to (well, not infinite really, but quite a large number). So, why not start today and go reinforce those abstract bridges that you have ignored due to the passing of time and construct new ones as you roll along in the long path of life.
