Recently, I have decided to plunge into programming once again. Not the algorithm/comp-sch kind which I have given up a long time ago but the application kind.
It's being a blast learning about the intricacies of C#.NET programming which is the primary platform I am using now. I have learnt to bring together C# and MySQL which still remains my favourite database. Also, it took me quite a while (3 weeks to be exact) to figure out how to control the guardroom's new barcode scanners to C# but now the result has been encouraging. It's also worthwhile mentioning that Windows GUI programming seems like a breeze in C# compared to C/C++.
Other than C#, there's still my trusty PHP/MySQL platform for web projects. Quite nice to revisit them after some period of neglect. Sadly, I haven't gotten used to using OOP in PHP but I guess I will get used OOP in PHP someday.
Till then, hello world!

Life is just so fragile. Last Wednesday, I walked past this corridor near the cookhouse and I saw 2 dead birds lying on the ground. Mind you, they were small and just look like they did not hatch too long ago. Alas, the answer was found when I saw this nest that was dislodged from this small gap in the roofing. The birds must have shook the nest quite a bit and sending themselves to their impending doom.
Talking about birds falling to their deaths, the AF 447 incident deserves a mention. Perhaps, this incident serves to highlight the fragility of life and where we stand in the grand scheme of things in Nature. No matter how advanced our technology is and how many precautions we take, when the scythe of the Grim Reaper strikes, there's no escape. Not being fatalistic here but when an accident happens in the supposedly safest part of a flight (cruising) and in the middle of a weather system commonly encountered on commercial flights, you have to wonder if Fate really has a wicked plan in place all along. Such is the fragility of life.

And speaking of which, this poignant image of the debris of AF 447 found by the search teams just somehow reminds me of something ironic. That is the rudder of the plane remaining pretty much intact after the incident. Its triangular shape and position on a plane just reminds me of the dorsal fin of sharks, doesn't it? Just as we grief when we see the triangular 'fin' of the plane floating in the water, the fishermen who catch sharks, cut off their fins and throw them back into the ocean to die hardly dropped a tear when they see the triangular fin of the shark because it represents income for them.
Really ironic, isn't it? Our compassion just doesn't seem to extend to other species.
It seems like intelligence and compassion are not in directly correlation to each other.

Yesterday, I fell asleep in the gym while lying on the mat doing crunches.
A first, I must say. Perhaps I am jst too tired.
I need to recharge my batteries soon.

Throughout my various driving lessons, I have never struck the kerb, much less mount it.
I did both today, stricking the kerb twice during my warm-up and committing the coup de grace, mounting the kerb, on the test itself.
Needless to say, I failed the driving test. It felt really disappointing and if the car does not belong to the school, I am pretty sure I would punched the steering wheel and possibly inflating the airbag.
After that, my parents decided to take me to have lunch at Ding Tai Fung to chill out. Then, it was time for me to upgrade my phone plan due to the pressing need for free incoming calls. Had a hard time choosing which phone to take but finally decided to take the Asus P552W for $188.
It feels good and looks good. Seems like retail therapy does help. A wee bit.

Last Friday, I went home quite late after gym.
Since my parents were still 20 minutes away, I decided to treat my RPs with a packet of fries from the mess.
In the end, they kindly declined the offer. Even the OCTs (who are more likely to be hungry) refuse my fries. I even tried to offer the fries to this uncle whose van was parked outside camp. The rejection placard was once again shoved into my face.
In the end, I offered it to my parents but not before I finished half the packet on my own.
Consolation? My mother said that the fries were pretty nice. I guess that's the max comfort I can get for now.
